Well that date came and went and we did not have a meeting. I apologize for not getting us together. However, not all is lost! I know this year's APSAF meeting is a long way from the mountains of WNC but I would like to hold an informal meeting with Pisgah Chapter members following our NC Division meeting.
My two year term as chapter chair has ended. Given that we did not have a fall meeting, usually the time when elections are held, we need to do so following the APSAF meeting. We are a little out of protocol given that the new chair should be in place at the beginning of the new year. I will do everything I can to help our new chair with the transition. If you are interested in "running/serving" as a chapter chair please contact me. We have a dedicated group of chapter members who attend and have served in this position so it would be great to get some "new blood" that would be dedicated to the chapter and its members.
Our fall\winter meeting will be held on Tuesday, February 24th at LaPaz Restaurant in Asheville. Mixer will start at 6:30PM with dinner at 7:00PM. I hope to see you all there. I hope that all of you have been having a great summer and are ready for an awesome Pisgah Chapter Meeting!!!!! Our spring meeting at Warren Wilson was a great success and the students did an excellent job putting together a wonderful tour of their school forest.
This Quarter’s meeting will be held at LaPaz Restaurant on August 26, 2008 at 6:30 PM... What better way to spice up the summer with some wonderful Mexican food in our own private dinning room (some of you may remember the meeting at Buffalo Wild Wings… WHAT? I CAN"T HEAR YOU!). Our speaker for this months meeting is Mr. Alex Comfort, Director of the Cradle of Forestry Foundation, who will discuss the joint goals of the Foundation and the USFS, in regards to the programming and management of the "Birthplace of Forestry Education". One category 1 CFE will be rewarded for attending the meeting. If you have not been to a meeting this year or have "gotten out of the habit", this is a great chance to come out and meet with your friends and collegues in WNC. See attached for meeting flyer.
For directions please copy and paste the link in your browser. http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=101366409239551276769.0004543a308c4c0f679f8&t=h&ll=35.568364,-82.540305&spn=0.008238,0.019226&z=16

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://pisgahsaf.blogspot.com/2008/08/back-on-trail-trail-blazer-that-is.html' title='Back on the Trail... The event, hosted this year by the University of Tennessee, brought 16 other forestry clubs from baccalaureate forestry programs throughout the southeast. While the Haywood team competed on a non-point basis, Josh "Tiny" Roten and Jason Jones finished with the fastest times in two events, men's bowsaw and the log roll, while Jay Blackburn had the third best score in the axe-throw. (Carhartt representatives had to give up a couple of new baseball caps after daring Tiny and JJ to finish first in the log roll!). Team members also had ample opportunity to practice their academic forestry skills in stand volume estimation, wood identification, dendrology, wildlife identification, compass-and-pacing, and other technical events.
NC State, Virginia Tech, and Alabama A&M Universities gave Haywood a nod (and fan support!) in an attempt to vote the forestry club into the Association of Southern Forestry Clubs. Currently there are no forestry clubs from 2-year programs in this association, but Haywood's strong showing will hopefully open up the potential for future consideration. Forestry Club advisors Blair Bishop and Jim Hamilton were also able to catch up with old friends and colleagues and talk up our program and students.

First in Forestry License Plate

In recognition of the importance of forestry in North Carolina, and the state's status as the birthplace of professional forestry in the United States, the N.C. General Assembly has approved a special "First in Forestry" license plate. $10 of the $30 fee collected for each plate will go toward forestry education programs in the state.
The Division of Forest Resources is now accepting applications and checks for the first 300 license plates. If you would like to proudly display your support for N.C. forestry, please make your request via the form below and mail it and your check (payable to the First in Forestry License Plate fund) to:
Dianne Beasley, Assistant DirectorDivision of Forest Resources1616 Mail Service CenterRaleigh, NC 27699-1616
. The NC Division of Motor Vehicles will not accept applications until we have collected the first 300.
Your First in Forestry plate will be mailed directly to you by DMV. While waiting for your plate, continue to keep your present plate registration current. Your new Forestry registration (tag) will have the same expiration date as your current tag. DMV will track this and will include information with your new plate.
Note: First in Forestry plates can be purchased for “weighted” vehicles (including buses and camping trailers) from 7,000 pounds up to 26,000 pounds. The plate will not be marked as weighted, but the registration will indicate its status.
